Espoir Goma

Espoir Goma is an NGO affiliated with Days for Girls International, based in Mount Vernon, Washington. It is based in Goma, Nord Kivu. Espoir Goma prepares and distributes sustainable menstrual health solutions to girls who might otherwise miss school during their monthly periods.

The organization produces washable, reusable pads and provides the girls with a personal kit containing all they need to continue their schooling with hygiene and dignity. Each kit is designed to last five years.

The kits include a draw-string bag that contains reusable cloth menstrual pads made of colorful shields and liners (more than one liner can be put in a shield if a girl has a heavy menstrual flow). The liners are bright and pretty; most people think they are handkerchiefs when they see them out to dry, panties, a washcloth and soap, a carry pouch for washing and storing, and other essential items.

The kit enables girls to manage their clean and used pads discreetly and to maintain their own hygiene needs. Additionally, health education is provided to address and break the stigmas and cultural taboos associated with menstruation.
